The Afterlives of Black Tech explores what happens to online communities when their related online platform or technology dies or, less dramatically, morphs into something unrecognizable. From Net Noir and BlackPlanet to MySpace and Black Twitter, racial communities have long found a home in online spaces, a history that critical digital scholars have expertly charted (McIlwain, 2020). Beyond making this history visible, this book project aims to fill in the gaps of how and in what ways each online community managed to morph into the next, if at all.
