FMS Professor Colin Burnett's Sight & Sound Greatest Films Ballot

Revealed: the results of the 2022 Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time poll.

In December 2022, Sight & Sound magazine (UK) released its once-per-decade poll of the 100 Greatest Films of All Time, first conducted in 1952. Film & Media Studies professor Colin Burnett was among the 1600 critics and scholars from across the globe to contribute a ballot, which you can read here.

"As a scholar of global cinema, I based my choices on two questions," Burnett explains. "First, what are the most important films ever made outside the US? And second, among these films, which ones made significant contributions to the social, cultural, and aesthetic history of the art form? Beyond that, I wanted to achieve balance—to include films from across the globe, not just the Global North, and to emphasize the importance of ambitious women filmmakers throughout film history."

Professor Burnett writes about one of his top Sight & Sound choices, the 1966 French film Au hasard Balthazar, in his 2017 book, The Invention of Robert Bresson: The Auteur and his Market, which is available here.
