Seeing and Seeking: A Beholder’s Guide to Gombrich

E. H. Gombrich made lasting contributions not only to our understanding of Renaissance art, but also to art theory. This talk considers some of his central ideas and suggests how they can inform our appreciation of art and our research into cinema.
David Bordwell is the Jacques Ledoux Professor of Film Studies, Department of Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is the author, most recently, of The Rhapsodes: How 1940s Critics Changed American Film Culture. With Kristin Thompson, he is coauthor of Film Art: An Introduction and Film History: An Introduction and the blog Observations on Film Art.
